August, 2019: Thermo Fisher Scientific was crowned winner of the prestigious Australian Business Award for Community Contributions for the second consecutive year. The award, which was presented in recognition of the company’s Corporate Social Responsibility efforts in Australia and New Zealand (ANZ), distinguishes organizations that implement initiatives that have a positive community impact and generate outcomes with long-term benefits.
The Australia and New Zealand (ANZ) Community Action Council (CAC), a group that facilitates local employees with opportunities for volunteerism and philanthropy, was instrumental in making this achievement possible. Since 2016, the council has fostered a culture of involvement in the region. In collaboration with the local resource groups as well as other employee-led groups, employees have participated in a number of volunteer events, including assembling care packages for the homeless and participating in “Clean Up Australia Day”. The CAC also supports Thermo Fisher’s commitment to STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) education and has partnered with various schools to deliver more than 80 STEM-related projects to approximately 1,500 students.
In addition, the Australia and New Zealand sites are committed to a cleaner world by reducing their footprint on the environment. Green teams have been initiated across ANZ to assist with the facilitation of a waste reduction program. Through the green team’s efforts, the region’s biggest site,Scoresby, Australia, has diverted 75% of waste from landfill.
“We are incredibly proud of our employees and the value they hold in community action,” said Stephen Pickering, vice president and general manager for Thermo Fisher’s Australia and New Zealand regions. “The recognition of our employees’ efforts in giving back to the community is greatly appreciated by all. Involvement is one of our values and is key to our culture. We will continue to drive the connection between local community and industry, whether that is in partnering with local schools for STEM initiatives or fundraising for local charities.”
