Biocon Academy and Thermo Fisher Scientific began a partnership five years ago, with the goal of offering experiential, hands-on training to graduate and post graduate students from the life sciences background. As part of the collaboration, both organizations have been working closely to bridge the gap between academia and industry. The partnership supports Biocon Academy students in gaining the required industry they need to succeed through week-long practical training and frequent guest lectures delivered by technical experts from Thermo Fisher Scientific.
As of today, more than 10 groups have achieved a Biocon KGI Certificate Program in Biosciences and three groups of Biocon Ramaiah Certificate Program in Quality Control Analytical have benefitted from the collaboration between Biocon Academy and Thermo Fisher.
The students of the Biosciences program have been visiting the Bangalore R&D Centre of Thermo Fisher Scientific where they undergo molecular biotechnology training. Throughout the training program, students have access to high throughput and advanced instruments. In addition, students of the QCA program have been receiving residential hands-on training on QC equipment at Thermo Fisher, Mumbai.
Speaking about the partnership, Amit Chopra, Managing Director, India and South Asia, Thermo Fisher Scientific said, “Pharma and biopharma industries are in constant need for forward-looking analytical technologies. Our partnership with Biocon Academy offers experiential hands-on training that transforms graduate and post graduate students into professionals ready to take on the evolving needs of the biotech and pharma industry. This further strengthens the mutual support we share with our customers."
Bindu Ajit, Program Dean, Biocon Academy said, "To ensure a holistic approach to our programs, our partnership with Thermo Fisher Scientific enables our students to have an opportunity to receive hands-on training on state-of-the-art instruments and technology. Our partnership kickstarted five years ago when we first offered a week-long training module along with guest lectures to the students of our Biocon KGI Certificate Program in Biosciences. The partnership has simply blossomed during the years and has trained hundreds of students. Experts from Thermo Fisher Scientific have also trained Syngene and Biocon employees."
During the pandemic, to ensure safety of the students, Biocon Academy and Thermo Fisher rapidly adapted to offer near real-life experiential training virtually. Guest lectures and week-long training by industry experts were delivered directly fromthe state-of-the-art labs.
“Thermo Fisher has been collaborating with Biocon Academy for the past five years and it has been a great experience. Due to the pandemic, we had to conduct virtual training for the last few batches, and we hope the Biocon Academy students have been enjoying that. I am also happy to mention that we have hired students from Biocon Academy, and they are stars over here,” said Dr. Suchitra Sajja, R&D Manager, Thermo Fisher Scientific.
